Church of Gesu Nuovo Interiors

After passing through the portal of the church, I was completely amazed by the huge size of its interior space and the richness of the decor, since all this splendor is hidden behind a very modest facade. The church has the shape of a Greek cross in the plan, somewhat elongated along the longitudinal axis. In the side aisles, which have separate entrances, there are five chapels. The rich Baroque decoration appeared in 1639, when, after a fire, the restoration of the interiors was entrusted to the famous architect and sculptor Cosimo Frantzago (Cosimo Fanzago). The columns dividing the naves were lined with pink marble and richly decorated with stucco, the walls and ceiling were painted with frescoes. Originally the floor was terracotta, but at the beginning of the 18th century it was replaced with marble, on which you can see many coats of arms and tombstones. The middle part of the main nave is closed by a large spherical dome, built in 1786.
